Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC)

Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce 2017 Annual National General Assembly
‘Action now, look to the future’

Good morning Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) members, National Council Members, Secretariat staff, members of the media, ladies and gentlemen.

On behalf of the 11th National Council Members of MCCC, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the members and attendees for participating in the Annual National General Assembly.

The 11th National Council Members were formed in July last year, and received the affirmation and blessing from the previous presidents and life honorary presidents. This gives us great encouragement and confidence in leading the MCCC, fostering the relationship between Malaysia and China and heading for a better tomorrow.

Tomorrow's achievement is reflected by today's efforts.

Recently, Malaysia-China bilateral relations have become increasingly close. The bilateral trade between the two countries managed to achieve more than USD100 billion last year after a slight slowdown for the past three years. The number of tourists from China in the past year has also surged to more than two million. This year, the official estimation number of tourists from China is three million. Based on the current trend, it should be possible to achieve the target number by the end of this year. The Malaysia-China relationship is strengthened with the development of Melaka Gateway, Impression Melaka, Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park and etc.

China has recently held a ‘Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation’ in Beijing, attracting more than a thousand leaders from 28 countries and international organizations. This has once again confirmed the rise of China is unstoppable and the great influence ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) has on the future of the world. While the United States adopts the ‘protectionist economic policy’, China has the opportunity to fill this international leadership, vigorously promote internationalization of trade; continue to provide the driving force of international economic development.

In recent years, China is promoting the cultural elements and implementing the ‘people-to-people bond’ apart from emphasizing on the economic power of the BRI. China official has recently released a number of documents to clarify the rise of China cannot be separated from the revitalization of traditional Chinese culture. China official stressed that there is no conflict between the classical culture and modern socialism but they complement each other. The traditional culture is accepted again after being rejected since the Cultural Revolution. It is hoped that this move can curb some of the impetuosity in China. This is a new trend in promoting the BRI.

Ladies and gentlemen,

the 11th National Council Members will continue to promote MCCC affairs and provide more services with the solid foundation provided by the past National Council Members. The MCCC has set up a Malaysia-China Economic and Trade Research Centre to carry out research on the economic and trade in Malaysia with the help of scholars from Malaysia and China. We will also launch the ‘China-ASEAN Finance Training and Information Network’ in the near future to strengthen the service of MCCC.

The MCCC will continue to extensively contact other local trade organizations to organize economic and trade activities. In addition, we will continue to consolidate the friendly exchanges with the China government agencies and business associations, and strive for a better strategic cooperation between Malaysia and China.

It is gratifying that MCCC has become the liaison centers for some China organizations. The plaques – Guangdong Tourism Promotion Center in Malaysia, Chengdu Overseas Exchange Association Liaison Office and etc – on the wall at ground floor corridor affirm MCCC close strategic partnership with them.

Finally, thank you for your attendance. I hope that the Annual National General Assembly will enable all members to engage with the 11th National Council Members and allow them to listen to the voices of the members in order to understand and protect the interests of the members, and make important decisions that can strengthen MCCC’s reputation and influence.

Thank you.
