Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) supports the Tabung Harapan Malaysia (THM) fund set up by the current cabinet by urging its members to donate as it feels that the country’s economy is facing severe challenges of debt.

The MCCC issued a statement stating that since the Pakatan Harapan coalition came to power three weeks ago, it has implemented a number of measures to deal with the problem of the country’s high debt. In addition to the cabinet ministers taking the lead in a 10% pay cut, several state governments have also followed suit. Some individuals in the private sector have consciously perceived that they have a share of responsibility for the fate of the country and spontaneously raise funds to save the country. This is an attempt that has not been done in the past. It is evident that the people have high hopes towards the new government.

After chairing the second cabinet meeting on 30 May, the Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, announced that the government has found that many people are willing to donate to the government to solve the financial problems. The cabinet therefore agreed to set up a THM fund to receive the people’s financial aid.

As our country is going through tough times now, the MCCC, as a non-governmental organisation, is also obliged to work together to urge its members to support the fundraising campaign. It is not the money that counts but the patriotism towards the country.
